A gallon in Mississippi carries 7.0¢ less tax than one in Alabama: about $10.50 less at the pump on a 150-gallon fill.
Under IFTA, the tax evens out. Your quarterly return charges each state's rate on the miles you drove in it and credits the tax you paid at the pump, so a tank bought where the tax is low is made up on the return. What you keep by choosing where to fill is the difference in the price before tax.
