Fuel surcharge

An amount the carrier pays the owner-operator on each load, on top of the order share, to offset the price of diesel.

Also called: FSC, O/O fuel surcharge.

Does it pay the driver? Not a pay item.

Owner revenue; nothing to do with the driver’s pay.

Fuel surcharge tracks the national diesel price: when fuel is high the surcharge is higher. On a settlement it shows as an earning line per load, and it is the owner’s revenue.

It is not driver pay and does not enter the driver’s pay sheet. It also is not the same as the fuel deductions on the same sheet, which are purchases on the carrier’s card coming back off the owner’s check.

  • Settlement — The carrier’s statement of what it owes the owner-operator for a load, and the check that pays it.
  • Fuel card — The carrier’s card the driver fuels on; each purchase comes off the owner’s settlement, and none of it touches driver pay.
  • Order share — The owner-operator’s cut of what the shipper paid for the load — often 75 to 85 percent of the order gross.
